Two Democrats will face a runoff for the right to challenge Republican incumbent Richard Snelgrove this November for a six-year at-large seat on the Salt Lake County Council.

But that's the only one of five county positions that require some kind of decision before the general election. And two of those positions feature incumbents who will appear unopposed on the ballot — Republican Michael Jenson in District 2, representing the far west side, and Democrat Sam Granato, whose District 4 covers the east-central part of the valley.

Democratic Mayor Ben McAdams' bid for a second term will face a November challenge from Republican businessman Dave Robinson.

A bid for a third term by Republican Max Burdick, currently the County Council chairman, will be contested by Democrat Abigail Wright.

While the county government races did not generate a lot of interest, the creation of Millcreek City on Jan. 1, 2017, inspired scores of candidates to seek positions in its first governing body.

Nine people have filed to be mayor (Phillip Archer, Craig Cook, Edward Frank, Fred Healey, Scott Howell, Becky Moss, Jeff Silvestrini, Verdi White and Jo-Ann Wong).

Interest has been just as high for the new city's four council seats:

• District 1 — Diane Angus, Silvia Catten, Lorrin Colby, Jr., Gar Hendry and Thomas Richards.

• District 2 — John Douglas, Dwight Marchant, Rivka Richman, Dwayne Vance and Jamie Walker.

• District 3 — Chaskey Barry, Cheri Jackson, Jem Keller, John Lish, Bob Shupe, Jeffrey Waters, Don Willie, Adam Zimmerman.

• District 4 — Seraya Amirthalingam, Lisa Bagley, Robert Beardshall, Barry Bowen, Vaughn Howard, LaMont Tyler, Bev Uipi and Kurt Zimmerman.

The five metro townships (Magna, Kearns, Copperton, White City and Emigration Canyon) approved by voters last year also attracted an abundance of candidates to serve on their initial councils.

In Magna and Kearns, where the councils will be made up of five district representatives, eight of the 10 races have at least two candidates.

In the other three metro townships — where residents will elect their councils at large because their populations are under 10,000 — White City has fielded nine candidates, Emigration Canyon eight and Copperton six. —
